You made it to this page, so we think you know the movie The Social Network. If not, click here.

Do you think the social network
is becoming a cult film? Tell us why.

Welcome to a project that wants to find out how films get to be called ‘cult’.

The term ‘cult’ has been used a lot to describe films. It is often linked to classic film, such as Casablanca, or to midnight movies such as The Rocky Horror Picture Show, or Eraserhead.

But it also used more recently. For better or for worse, Snakes on a Plane has been called ‘cult’. So have Napoleon Dynamite, Twilight, The Dark Knight, and The Lord of the Rings.

And smaller, darker films such as Ichi the Killer, Donnie Darko or Ginger Snaps have been called cult too.

We want to know what you think about
Cult Movies in the 21st Century.

We are a team of researchers from the University of British Columbia, in Vancouver, Canada. We want to find out why today’s film viewers would call a recent film ‘cult’.

If you would like to find out more about the entire project, and perhaps share your views with us, please visit

We have set up an online-survey to ask audiences about their opinions on 4 recent films.

Please complete our questionnaire.

The producers and distributors of The Social Network know of our research. Because they respect their audiences they like it. But they did not commission it, and we’re not in any way related to them. And we have no arrangements with them to share any information.

This research is not for commercial purposes. It is conducted at the Centre for Cinema Studies, in the Department of Theatre and Film, at the University of British Columbia. None of the information you submit will be shared with third parties. Completing this questionnaire assumes you consent to the information you submitted being used in the study. Please read carefully the consent form at the bottom of the questionnaire. It has detailed information on your rights as participant in this research.
